Lando looked over his shoulder and watched Kallen take up the legendary technomage wand, one he recognized from his studies to have belonged to their first king, Tarragon. He’d seen Kallen handle it easily, tossing it up and making it spin midair, allowing it to split into three parts and form a triangle. He’d watched from the sidelines as the king taught the young Kallen to make lightning travel down the wand without fear. It was the same wand that, when cast with the sphere pointing out to an open space, could open a gate to allow for passage across the universe safely and in no time. The king held something similar to it, but its power was nothing compared to what Kallen had in his hand.

Lando moved to one side when Kallen walked up beside him, threw him a mischievous smile and a wink before holding his wand’s sphere over the IAB bank. From the artifact, an indigo light enveloped the bank. He watched in awe as the bank rose as if tethered to the wand, Kallen following its movements, holding the wand an inch from it. With a softly spoken spell of indecipherable words, the sphere began to pulse red, yellow, and then back to indigo.

Lando felt something in his mind connect with that of another thought, and he knew Kallen was merging the IAB to his brain. He felt his anxiety rise. What if it didn’t work? What if the IAB rejected him, as some were known to do?

“Just relax, Lando,” Kallen said, throwing him a quick smile of reassurance before focusing on the bank once more. “This will only take a few seconds. Allow it to hook up with your brain. Trust me.” Despite Kallen’s low voice, Lando recognized the determined look on the handsome face.

When Kallen finished his spell, Lando felt a subtle change inside his head. At first he felt it question him, but he didn’t understand the words. He startled when a disembodied voice came from hidden speakers in the prince’s quarters.

“Greetings, controller Lando Garr. I am Tanis. How may I serve you?”

Lando’s grin nearly split his face. Impulsively, he turned to the smiling Kallen and wrapped his arms around the young man.

“Thank you. Thank you.”

As their bodies touched, Lando knew he’d overstepped his position. He held his breath, fearing his prince would reject him, but Kallen hugged him back, even held him tight for more than a minute, before finally letting him go with a last pat on his back.

Lando felt his face flush when Kallen caught his gaze and stared at him, his expression inscrutable. Finally, he blinked, breaking their connection. A hint of a smile curved on his lips, transforming his already handsome face into something beautiful. The glint in his eyes held something more than what Lando had always thought of as hero worship for him. Feelings of love for his prince almost made him choke, but he held a tight leash over the rush of emotions that swept through him.
